Jimmy Rollins |
When the contract expires, Rollins will stay with the organization that has been his home since 1996, when the Phillies drafted him in the second round of the amateur draft.
Rollins, 33, is a three-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove and was voted MVP of the NL in 2007. Is fourth in hits in the list of all-time behind the Phillies with Richie Ashburn 1.866, Mike Schmidt and Ed Delahanty and is among the top five of the franchise in games played, plate appearances, runs, total bases, doubles, triples and stolen bases.
Rollins now joins Jose Reyes (Miami Marlins), Alex Gonzalez (Milwaukee Brewers), Rafael Furcal (St. Louis) and Clint Barmes (Pittsburgh Pirates) and the fifth shortstop in reaching an agreement holder multi-agent open this winter.
Although Rollins had expressed an interest in signing a five-year contract entering the free agent market, the current agreement with the Phillies should keep at least until the end of the season of 2015, when about to turn its 27 years.
Rollins will join Philadelphia this season with his great friend Dontrelle Willis, who last Thursday signed a one-year contract to pitch for the club.
Meanwhile, in a multiple change, the Cincinnati Reds won the 14-game winner Matt Latos, pitcher who played 24 years with the San Diego Padres in 2011, in exchange for delivering the young first baseman Yonder Alonso, the pitcher Edindson Volquez, who was opening day starter last season and finished at 5-7 and 5.71 ERA, a catching prospect Yasmani Grandal, and pitcher Brad Boxberger.
