The catcher Jorge Posada, one of the cornerstones of the Yankees for 17 seasons, announced his retirement from baseball within the next two weeks, Sweeny Murti reported yesterday, the station WFAN, on his Twitter account. Buster Olney, "ESPN The Magazine" and the Associated Press confirmed the information yesterday.

The Puerto Rican, 40 years old, played his entire career with the Yankees, batting .273 with 275 homers and RBIs 1.065. In 2011 he batted .235 with 14 homers and 44 produced in a limited role.

Of the 13 catchers already in the Hall of Famer Yogi Berra only has better numbers Posada batting, homers and RBIs. "I will always be a Yankee," he said in November. "For me, the Yankees are my second family. It would be difficult to wear another uniform and adapt to another set."
