First samples of consumer outrage, Verizon Wireless has canceled a plan that would begin to charge two dollars for each payment made by subscribers by phone or online with their credit cards.

Through a statement released on Friday its Web site, the mobile operator said that the "consumer feedback" prompted the decision to remove the "convenience fee" that wanted to charge from the January 15 .

Verizon, the largest cellular company in the country, wanted to persuade people to make payments by electronic check or automated collection authorize your credit cards.

A petition filed in the Change.org site for the annulment of the changes had collected 57,000 names of dissidents on Friday afternoon.

Other companies have tried to ensure that subscribers are automatic payments pass through other means. AT & T Inc. offers a gift card for $ 10 for those who install AutoPay. Sprint Nextel Corp. charged to subscribers who have caps on fees that can accumulate each month. These people pay $ 5 a month, unless you set up automatic payments.

It is not uncommon for utilities, universities and even state tax departments charge fees for online payments. Each payment by credit card comes with fees that can be avoided if companies instead use electronic checks. Automatic payments mean fewer problems for companies trying to collect late payments.

Last year, Verizon Communications Inc., the telephone company that owns most of Verizon Wireless, tried to introduce a $ 3.50 fee for people who paid their bill FiOS TV or Internet service month months with credit card. Backed down after complaints.

Verizon Wireless operates 91 million phones and other devices in accounts that pay the company directly, and indirectly paid by other companies.
